A new review, dated 3/30/01, has come in from The News Tribune in Tacoma, Washington and it's a good one! Staff writer Bill Hutchins writes:
If Austin Powers had been a woman, he would have been Cate Archer. The lovely British freshman spy stars in No One Lives Forever, Fox Interactive's action-packed spoof of 1960s secret-agent flicks. NOLF, as fans are calling it, is not only one of the best first- person shooters to grace the PC since Sierra's HalfLife, it is also one of the funniest games around. Cate is a talented but low-level agent for Unity, a British intelligence agency. When bad guys from HARM (a running gag is that no-one knows exactly what the acronym stands for) start offing Unity agents, Cate steps in for some cloak-and-dagger adventure. Part of the fun comes from the interesting gadgets Cate uses during missions in Morocco, Berlin, the Caribbean and the Swiss Alps. In addition to automatic pistols, rifles and machine guns, Unity toys include a barrette that doubles as a lock pick and poison blade, sleeping-gas perfume spray, camera glasses, fuzzy slippers for stifling footsteps and explosive lipstick. You'll want to play missions over and over to catch all of the action and humor. For instance, if you step around a corner too quickly in Morocco, you might miss a funny conversation between guards. Once in a while, they'll even get into arguments and shoot each other. Creep like a spy instead of barging in like a commando, and you'll encounter more of the fun stuff. You hear greatly exaggerated German and Middle Eastern accents, and you'll catch Unity operatives complaining about the horribly embarrassing pickup lines they're forced to use as secret password phrases. And, if you listen closely, you often hear henchmen debating the merits of benefits packages and signing bonuses of the various criminal groups bent on world domination. Nearly every level requires players to pick up "top secret" documents left lying around. Agents get a better score when they pick up all of the hidden pieces of information. Some of these scraps help Unity scientists assemble new weapons. Some are letters home, in which thugs proudly inform girlfriends and parents of upcoming newscasts showcasing their terrorist exploits. Levels start with a set of objectives, but players can pick and choose the paths they take. You might pick a lock, creep into a courtyard and poison a guard or you might find a way up to a high balcony for some sniping. No matter how you play, take it slowly so you can experience everything this wonderful game has to offer.

The newspaper has given NOLF 4 out of 5 stars and if you ask me, it's a great review! Enjoy the praise that is being delivered for this great game.

Gamespot's Review - reviewed on November 10th, 2000 by Erik Wolpaw

"A first person shooter has finally arrived that is so stylish, so ingenious, so well written, so well acted and otherwise so great that this review won't have to include the expression "it's no Half-Life" - except for right there."

IGN's Review - reviewed on November 10th, 2000 by Tal Blevins

"Pigs are flying, hell is frozen, and Monolith has produced one of the best shooters of the year!...No One Lives Forever (NOLF) combines a first-rate plot, grandiose explosions, superb dialogue, and plenty of trigger-happy action to make for one of the best gaming experiences we've had all year."

NOLF also won the Editor's Choice Award!

Voodoo Extreme's Review - reviewed on November 9th, 2000 by Robert "Apache" Howarth

"After several years of broken promises, poor customer support, abrasive public relations practices and plenty of hopped-up hype, Monolith has pulled the proverbial rabbit out of its ass, delivering the best first-person shooter since Valve Software blessed us with Half-Life. No One Lives Forever, from the mind of Designer Craig Hubbard, not only provides an innovative gaming experience, but one which has forever etched itself into my memory as one of the best story-driven, first-person shooters of all time."

NOLF also won the Whoopass Can Award!

Computer Games Online's Review - reviewed on November 8th, 2000 by Jason Cross

"No One Lives Forever combines a fantastic sense of style with great animation and voice acting, clever AI, industry-leading interactive music, a wry sense of humor, and gameplay that keeps you coming back for more. It's the absolute antithesis of every hackneyed blast-a-thon through yet another dungeon, space station, sewer, or subway station full of button pushing and lever flipping. Don't let Monolith's past games scare you away from this one—in the two years since Half-Life raised the bar for everyone, no other shooter has come as close to living up to our raised expectations for the genre."

Stomped Review - reviewed on November 10th, 2000 by John "JCal" Callaham

" This game, with its 60's spy theme and a dash of humor, is easily the best pure FPS this year. Indeed, it's the best game of its kind since Half-Life. No One Lives Forever is an excellent title from Monolith and Fox, and should be a must have for any action gaming fan."

"As a single-player game, No One Lives Forever is simply excellent. It's campy fun and originality put it immediately on short list of the best games of the year."

Firing Squad Review - reviewed on November 17th, 2000 by Sarju "Guido" Shah

"If sneaking around and thinking your way through missions is your bag, NOLF is probably the game for you. I'd probably be going too far if I were to put the game in the same category as Rogue Spear. NOLF is very similar, except with a good dose of comedy tossed in.

We loved everything about the game. We loved everything from the silly fez wearing guards right down to the random dissertations on the meaning of life. The graphics, sound, writing, and game play all come together to make playing the game a very enjoyable experience. If this game has issues, they were too small for us to care to mention. No problem was large enough to take away from the overall experience of the game. In short: play No One Lives Forever, laugh, and enjoy!"

Ant.com Review - reviewed recently by ANT Caustic

"As we approach the end of the year, I've begun to put together my list of nominees for best games of the year, and while RPG and sports have had some serious close battles, the shooter (action) genre had very little to speak for it. Thanks to Monolith, though, the short list just got a little longer. If you are a fan of the shooter genre, or of spy sagas that you can control, this is a game for you. Final Judgment: The First Person Shooter is back, baby -- and it's a gas!"

"The game is a triumph of design and humour, and deserves pride of place in any collection of games. As to the big question - is it better than Half-Life? It certainly has the weapons, the plot and the intelligence of Half-Life, and it also has a consistency of quality and tongue-in-cheek humour which Valve's opus never managed to pull off. All in all, we'd have to say that this game is, indeed, better than Half-Life - which, I guess, makes it into the best FPS game we've ever played. Sorry N64 owners - that does include GoldenEye and Perfect Dark! From the cheesy sixties-style opening song and credits to the spectacular finale, No One Lives Forever is almost perfect in every respect - if you buy only one first-person shooter game this year, make it this one, beyond a doubt."

Gaming Age Review - reviewed by Robert Outlaw

"The release of Valve’s Half-Life two years ago changed the face of first person shooters forever. No One Lives Forever shatters that barrier, and delivers the most compelling single-player FPS experience since Valve's Half-Life hit the scene over two years ago. No One Lives Forever is a shining example of bringing together a wide variety of different ideas, executing them with a ever-engaging style, and delivering a polished product that is a thrilling experience from beginning to end. It is honestly one of the most entertaining shooters to come out in years, and it’s a testament to what the how good this often-disappointing genre can do when all the elements are properly brought together."

Gone Gold Review - reviewed on November 17th by Dave Fisher

"Superb craftsmanship, inventive scripting, wonderful acting, brilliant enemy AI, sumptuous graphics are all placed in a huge, varied, and intensely colorful 60's setting by a team clearly bestowing care and love on their work and product. No One Lives Forever is one of the best Action/Adventure/Shooters ever, joining the ranks of Half-Life, Thief, and Deus Ex as an equal. It should be in contention for "Game of the Year." Cate is the grooviest heroine of the new millennium. My only regret was that the fun and wild ride ended. Let's hope NOLF is a foundation, leading to the further adventures of Cate Archer - perhaps NOLF 2 - "The Spy With The Exploding Lipstick.""

Happy Puppy Review - reviewed on November 27th by Scott Steinberg

"This adventure is so many frickin' light years ahead of the 007-licensed properties, that it makes GoldenEye look like The Golden Girls. When all's said and done, No One Lives Forever stands out as a product par excellence in what is perhaps the market's most overcrowded, stagnant genre. It exudes class and charm, from a quirky sense of humor (what other shooter features criminals who complain about their pay rates?) to deadly serious gameplay. More a series of interlinked tale-telling vignettes than a proper blast-'em-up, the small-screen heir to Austin Powers' legacy is nonetheless one of the finest offerings in years."

Mindless Games Review - reviewed by Pagangod and DemonCow

"Beautiful textures, amazing animation, and great models. Very interesting story to the very end. Lots of FUN, great level design, EXCELLENT AI; it feels as though you are fighting actual people. Great music and voice acting, and a bonus NOLF music disc comes with the game. You'll definitely play through the game more than once."

Bottom Line: An excellent game that is more than just an FPS. * Our early pick for Best Shooter of 2000.

Gamers Pulse Review - reviewed on November 29th by Scribbler

"NOLF is by far one of the best games to come out this year, and is certainly the best and most original single-player FPS experience to come down the pipeline since Half-Life. If you enjoy great story, super graphics, and excellent gameplay, then this is definitely a game for you."

Games First Review - reviewed by Rick Fehrenbacher

"No One Lives Forever has excellent and detailed graphics, an amusing narrative, a wicked sense of humor, and tons of personality. More importantly, it has the most well-balanced and enjoyable gameplay we’ve ever seen in a shooter. Some have suggested that No One Lives Forever is the best first-person shooter since Half-Life. We’d suggest it’s better."

"No One Lives Forever is essentially and I quote "One of the Greatest Games of the YEAR." There is no reason that this game shouldn't be in the top 10 if not the top 5. Stunning gameplay, exciting objectives, and you never get bored."

Adrenaline Vault Review - reviewed on November 24th by Nick Stewart

"Although it could have easily been a simple riff on the whole Austin Powers phenomenon, No One Lives Forever has shockingly shaped up to be one of the best FPS titles of the year. With a great sense of humor, a large single-player campaign and an incredible amount of replayability that belies its linear nature, No One Lives Forever is a groovy and intensely entertaining ride that no FPS fan should ignore."

"What's the final verdict? Stride to your local purveyor of software and demand your shiny slice 'o Lith! Do not pass Go, do not collect $200. No One Lives Forever will have quite a long life on my hard drive, methinks. This one gets 4 out of 5 copies of the DeCSS source code."

The Oxygen Tank Review - reviewed on November 20th by Orogrog

"Every aspect of NOLF has been very well done. Overall, No One Lives Forever is a good game, with stunning graphics, a strong story, well-done voice acting, stylish music and most of all, it's fun to play.
I strongly recommend this game to any FPS fan."

"Cate Archer is the true female heroine of the action game world - not just good looking, but intelligent, independent, and capable. Every little girl should have a Cate Archer action figure in her collection. Complete with Uzi. No One Lives Forever deserves to join the ranks of the great First Person Shooter games - which includes such lofty favorites as Half-Life and Thief II. The attention to detail, the interesting characters (both humorous and serious), and the obvious love of the game that went into making this title make it something that every gamer needs to have on their shelves. And a title that every developer should be forced to play to learn how to do it right."
